A handful of questions I’m often asked about this space, how it began, and what you can expect as you read along.
Why is the site called at27years?
At 27 years I became a CEO. I had the privilege of growing as a leader through successes, failures, challenges, and opportunities up and beyond that point. Those years shaped how I think about leadership, organizations, and responsibility. This site began as a way to reflect on those experiences. Today, it continues as a place to explore what leadership looks like as we continue to grow. The number may stay the same, but the journey doesn’t.
What is this blog about?
At its core, this is a leadership blog. I write about leadership, organizational culture, decision-making, stewardship, strategy, personal growth, and the lessons that come from leading real organizations with real people. Occasionally, I’ll branch into topics like technology, artificial intelligence, energy, or books that have influenced my thinking—always through the lens of leadership.
Who should read this blog?
Anyone who leads—or hopes to. That includes executives, supervisors, board members, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, students, and anyone interested in becoming more thoughtful in how they influence others. Leadership isn’t a title. It’s a responsibility.
Is this a business blog?
Not exactly. While many examples come from my professional life, this isn’t intended to be a management textbook or a business newsletter. It’s a collection of reflections about leadership that apply both inside and outside the workplace.
Are the stories based on real experiences?
Yes. Many posts are inspired by real situations I’ve encountered over the years. When I share stories involving other people or organizations, I change or omit details as appropriate to respect privacy and confidentiality. The lessons are real, even when identifying details are not.
Do the opinions expressed here represent my employer?
No. Everything written here reflects my personal thoughts and experiences. They should not be interpreted as official positions or statements of any organization with which I’m affiliated.
How often do you publish?
My goal is to publish a new article every other week. I’d rather write something worth reading than publish simply to meet a schedule, but consistency is important, and that’s the standard I’m working toward.
What leadership philosophy guides your writing?
I believe leadership is stewardship. The role of a leader is not to accumulate power but to create environments where people, organizations, and communities can thrive long after the leader is gone. Many of my posts come back to that idea.
Will you always have the answers?
Definitely not. This blog isn’t about presenting perfect solutions. It’s about asking better questions, sharing what experience has taught me, and continuing to learn. Some of my thinking will evolve over time—and that’s a good thing.
