A puzzle showed up the other day in the break room. I didn’t think much of it at the time. Within a few days pieces were starting to move on the table. Edges were found, colors grouped, some pieces joining with others. While I didn’t see who was moving the pieces around it wasn’t long until I started to hear stories about Roman’s so was talking with so Ana sap as they moved pieces around. Impromptu conversations were happening between people who normally would cross paths throughout the day. Organic moments in times were happening that people were coming together deepening relationships.
Throughout my career I have been a part of many non-organic attempts to build cross departmental relationships, but time after time it didn’t take long before people drifted.
The puzzle in the room or the unplanned lunch being cooked on the company grill seems to build stronger relationships than those planned events of “team building”.
Since that first puzzle more have shown up, and more people are talking informally about their day, work, and families…
